Swine Flu Travel Update
May 2009

Latest Travel Advisory: At SaveOnResorts.com, it is our mission to guide our guests in making the most well-informed travel decisions. As the human swine flu outbreak continues to grow both nationally and internationally, we promise to maintain this same superior service for our guests.

As of May 4th, 2009, 20 countries have officially reported 985 cases of the influenza A (H1N1) infection according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Mexico has reported 590 confirmed human cases of the virus with 25 deaths, and the United States has reported 226 human cases, including one death. According to the Associated Press, Mexican officials lowered their flu alert level in Mexico City on Monday and said they will allow cafes, museums and libraries to reopen this week. On Sunday, Mexico announced its swine flu epidemic had passed the worst and experts said the new H1N1 virus might be no more severe than the normal flu. While global health experts said it is too early for countries to completely lower their guard, there are no imminent plans to raise the pandemic alert level.

The WHO advises no restriction on regular travel or closure of borders. According to the World Health Organization, “limiting travel and imposing travel restrictions would have very little effect on stopping the virus from spreading, but would be highly disruptive to the global community”. However, people who are ill are urged to stay home and delay international travel. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.

I would like to go to Punta Cana - perhaps Paradiso in Late June/early July - when is the best time to go to the Dominican Republic weather wise, safety (no hurricanes).
