Top Five Memorial Day Destinations
May 2009
Every year, on the last Monday of May, Americans everywhere celebrate Memorial Day. The first Memorial Day was observed on May 30th, 1868 as a way of honoring the Union soldiers after the American Civil War. After World War I, the holiday was expanded to include all American casualties of any war, or military action.
Whether or not a person has a loved one in service of the country; be it past, present, or maybe not even at all, this is a day for people to step away from their busy schedules, remember those who have served and are currently serving, and spend time with their families. Most are given a day of rest this coming Monday, May 25th to observe the holiday. According to MSNBC*, it is estimated that 32.4 million people, roughly 11 percent of the U.S. population, will be traveling this Memorial Day weekend.
